How to get beach waves for the summer months

The summer months mean one thing: beach waves. Boho beauty takes centre stage from May to September and we couldn’t be happier. Think loose waves, tousled curls and tons of texture.

As easy as it might look, it’s harder than you think to truly perfect the beach hair look. Unless you’re blessed with flowing curled locks, you’re going to need a selection of products and tools to create the look.

How to get beach waves in 4 easy steps

Start with the right shampoo & conditioner

This couldn’t sound simpler but it’s one of the most important steps. Without the right products at this stage, your hair will fall flat and be unable to get that much-needed body and texture for beach hair.

Use the Bumble & Bumble Sunday Shampoo to start as it helps to clarify and get rid of all impurities and product build-up. Then, go in for a second cleanse with the Bumble & Bumble Foam Wash Shampoo, as it contains minerals and sea botanicals to add body, texture and volume.

The tricky part of this step is the conditioning element. Too much and your hair will become weighed down, too little and your hair is dry. We like to put conditioner just on the ends of our hair, but if your locks are particularly dry, work from the mid-lengths down for extra nourishment. Use the Bumble & Bumble Surf Creme Conditioner which will detangle and soften without making the hair feel heavy.

Add in the styling products

This is the step where you can truly have some fun and pick products dependant on what texture you like. Firstly though, make sure you add some extra body to your hair with the Aveda Thickening Hair Tonic. Made specially to combat thinning hair, it’s excellent for giving all hair types a boost of much needed volume all throughout, rather than simply at the roots.

  • If you love foam products: You will adore the Bumble & Bumble Surf Blow Dry Foam. It combines a lightweight mousse with a texturising salt spray to minimise the drying effects of a traditional salt spritzer.
  • If you love gel/cream formulations: You will love the Bumble & Bumble Texture. It has a hint of grit, which helps achieve that tousled look and texturisied finish.

It’s all in the blow-dry

This is where the magic happens. For undone, tousled and textured beach hair, you need to perfect the art of the blow-dry, and we have some great tips and rules to live by.

  1. Always dry your hair upside down if you struggle doing a traditional blow-dry. This will help to add incredible volume at the roots.
  2. Always start on a high temperature and finish on the cool setting. By using cold air at the end of your blow-dry, you will help seal in volume and shine.

The final tousle and texture

  1. If you like the look and feel of a traditional loose curl, take your favourite curling wand and create gentle waves.
  2. Then, take the Aveda Large Wood Paddle Brush and comb through to break up the curls and make them look more boho.
