Does your skin become drier, flakier and more sensitive during the winter months? As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, many of us notice changes in our skin. Exposure to the elements can cause a range of unwelcome skin concerns from dehydration, dryness and sensitisation, through to extreme chapping and flaky patches.

We caught up with Victoria Schofield, Education Executive at Dermalogica for some winter-proofing skincare tips. Due to the harsh climate outside and the moisture zapping indoor environment, dry winter skin is a common problem. Follow her top tips to keep skin looking dewy and glowing all year round.

Switch your face wash for a nourishing cleansing balm

If you’ve not tried Dermalogica’s new PreCleanse Balm yet, now’s the time! Not only will it thoroughly remove make-up, grime and pollutants in a flash, the nourishing plant oils will help restore the skins protective barrier. Follow this with Essential Cleansing Solution for a skin comforting second cleanse.

Gently exfoliate the skin

Exfoliating skin can help with flakiness and rough texture but winter skin may be less tolerant of hydroxy acids and scrubs. Use a gentle powder exfoliant to polish the skin without irritation. Multiple award winning Daily Microfoliant is the perfect winter skin smoother. It contains Rice Bran to gently remove flaky patches, leaving skin soft with a radiant glow. This is great to use over chapped lips too to improve the skin condition.

Upgrade to a rich moisturiser

This doesn’t mean using something really greasy that will make you breakout. Rather increase the weight of your cream slightly. For example, if you love Active Moist, try Skin Smoothing Cream. This additional hydration will combat the loss of moisture and comfort dry winter skin. Intensive Moisture Balance is another winter favourite, its rich but non-greasy formula is fortified with phytonutrients and vitamins.

Add in a face mask

Try a vitamin rich masque a few times a week to condition and repair winter skin. Vitamins A, C, E and F will nourish and restore skin, repairing winter damage. Cult favourite MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque contains a cocktail of skin regenerating vitamins in a creamy base to nourish parched, stressed skin.

Protect your lips

Our delicate lips often withstand the worst of the harsh conditions with chapping and flaking a very common occurrence. Protect and nourish lips with Renewal Lip Complex, an ultra-moisturising formula that utilises a patented Polypetide to help combat dryness and signs of lip ageing. Keep in your handbag and reapply throughout the day.

Take care of you

Caught a cold or the dreaded flu? Bet the skin around your nose is suffering because of all the blowing! Keep Barrier Repair to hand for winter skin emergencies! This water-less balm feels like silk as it melts into the skin, perfect to soothe and repair damaged skin. Apply around your sore nostrils or slather all over the face for an additional protective layer. Your winter coat in a tube.

Don’t forget to apply your daily SPF

The sun may not be out but it’s damaging, skin-ageing rays are still present, especially UVA which penetrates deep into the skin causing damage all year round. Solar Defence Booster SPF50 can be added to your favourite Dermalogica moisturiser, just mix 50:50 for a customised level of UV protection.

Keep hydrated

My final tip for combatting the skin drying effects of winter is to boost the water content in the air at home and in office environments. Try a humidifier, or place bowls of water next to radiators. You’ll be surprised at how quickly the water is evaporated into the dry air!
