6 best natural hair products

Natural hair products, organic shampoo and all natural conditioners are search terms that have seen huge rises in popularity throughout the past year. With more and more people choosing to go “naked” when it comes to their list of haircare ingredients, we’re delving into the best natural hair products and what makes them so special.

What’s SLS and SLES?

Firstly, it’s important to understand the chemicals missing from natural hair products and why. The two main culprits are SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) and SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate). Known as the “foaming agents” in shampoos, they can also be mildly irritating to those with sensitive skin and scalps. The best natural hair products don’t contain these chemicals to minimise the potential risks of causing redness, itching and aggravation, so make sure you always choose shampoo and conditioner without them present.

Other chemicals can include parabens (helps to preserve hair products) and silicones, which is what makes hair feel silky soft. If you are worried about using any of these ingredients, then it’s always best to go natural.

6 of the best natural hair products

Kérastase Aura Botanica

Kérastase launched a capsule collection of Aura Botanica last year. A natural haircare range, the brand added more products to the range earlier this year to include shampoos and conditioners suitable for coloured hair.

Each product contains a blend of up to 98% natural ingredients and is free from the common chemical nasties like SLS and SLES. Instead, they contain nourishing argan oil and cleansing natural micelles to keep the hair light, clean and well moisturised.

As it’s so conditioning and contains ingredients like Samoan coconut oil, the range is also suitable for curly and afro hair types, with specific curl products such as Crème de Boucles and Lait de Soie.

Pureology Superfood Masks

As their name suggests, these are some of the best natural hair products we have tried. Made from a blend of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants from their high superfood content, each mask has been formulated to provide intense nutrition to starved and thirsty hair.

There are 2 masks in the range to choose from, depending on your hair concern. If you have coloured locks in need of some love, the Pureology Hydrate Colour Care Superfood Mask is perfect. It’s enriched with a blend of superfoods, including coconut and avocado oils to nourished stressed-out tresses and leave them feeling super soft and smooth, all whilst protecting your beautiful colour.

If you feel your hair has become quite dehydrated and damaged, and you’re noticing more split ends than usual, you’ll adore the Strength Cure Superfood Treatment Mask. Goji berry extract provides antioxidant protection to shield against further damaging aggressors, while olive oil helps to promote good hair health and gorgeous shine.

Aveda Thickening Hair Tonic

If you suffer from limp locks but don’t want to use a ton of chemicals getting them voluminous, you will love Aveda’s Thickening Hair Tonic. It’s packed with densifying botanical extracts like Amla Fruit, and leaves your hair looking and feeling fuller and more bouncy.

Klorane Chamomile Shampoo

If you want to keep your blonde locks blonde this summer without turning to bleach, you will love Klorane’s Chamomile Shampoo. Free from synthetic colourants, silicone, parabens and SLS, it contains apigenin instead, which acts as a natural lightening agent and helps give a gorgeous golden hue to fatigued locks.

Follow with the Klorane Mango Butter Conditioner, which not only smells amazing (think of tropical and paradisial islands), it contains essential fatty acids to keep the hair hydrated and soft, so that damage is reduced.

Biolage R.A.W. Smoothing Styling Milk

If you suffer from frizz when the weather starts to heat up, you need the Biolage R.A.W Smoothing Styling Milk, which helps to tame flyaways all while beautifully scenting the hair. Infused with honey and oat, the lightweight emulsion helps to smooth, soften and style, all without a hint of a paraben, silicone or artificial colour or fragrance in sight.

Wella Professionals Elements Renew Mask

Containing zero parabens, Wella Elements is the more natural collection of the Wella haircare line. This luxuriously thick and hydrating hair mask helps to repair damaged locks and leave them feeling super soft to the touch. We love to use this before a big event as it doesn’t feel heavy on the hair, and instead leaves locks feeling and looking incredibly glossy and healthy.
