How do I find my perfect concealer shade?

International Makeup Artist for bareMinerals, SJ Froom, gives us her tips on how to find the best shade for your skin.

  1. First determine what your undertone is.
  2. When you look at the veins on the inside of your wrist, are they very blue? Is your natural hair colour red, blonde, black or brown and your eyes blue, grey or green? Do you look at the sun and turn red? If this sounds like you, you’re a cool undertone.
  3. If you see more green veins then you are warm toned, as the golden hue in your skin tone is filtering the blue. If your hair is brown, black or strawberry blonde and your eyes are either brown, hazel or amber plus you tan and turn straight into a bronzed goddess, then you’re warm undertone.
  4. Neutral undertones can be any of the above but normally if you burn a little in the sun but then tan nicely, you are a neutral.

If you have cool undertones, choose cool concealer shades to highlight and contour,’ she says. ‘For neutral undertones, go for neutral concealer shades and for golden skin tones, choose warmer shades

How to apply concealer for dark circles

Using the shade designed for your skin tone, glide BAREPRO® Concealer under the eyes, starting from the inner corner and moving outward.

Gently blend in using ring finger and finish by blending with the Shade & Diffuse Eye Brush.

How to apply concealer for blemishes & uneven skin tone

Using the shade designed for your skin tone, apply the concealer and pat in gently with ring finger.

For fuller coverage, blend out with a small, flat brush such as the Max Coverage Concealer Brush.

For best results, finish with a dusting of BAREPRO® Powder Foundation using the soft, fluffy Supreme Finisher Brush.

How to brighten dull or sallow skin with concealer

Using a colour one shade lighter, focus on the centre planes of the face to accentuate and add brightness. Applying to the forehead, cheeks, bridge of nose and chin will help to counteract dullness.

Blend using the Luxe Performance Brush. For extra precision around the nose, you can also use the Shade & Diffuse Eye Brush.

For best results, finish with a dusting of BAREPRO® Powder Foundation using the soft, fluffy Supreme Finisher Brush.

How to contour and highlight with concealer

Select two shades of concealer, one that is 2-3 intensities deeper and one that is 2-3 intensities lighter than your skin tone, depending on your desired level of contrast.

Apply the deeper shade in the hollow of the cheeks to sculpt and define cheekbones and along the sides of the forehead near the hairline to visually shorten the forehead.

Using the lighter shade, apply directly above contour shade on cheeks, down the bridge of nose, centre of forehead and chin to bring light to the centre of the face.

Using the Dual Finish Blush & Contour brush, buff in the lighter highlight areas first with long back and forth strokes, then blend in the deeper contour areas.

I am a big believer in the idea that beautiful Make Up begins with a superb skincare regime. I like to enhance my natural beauty rather than cover up and I am always on the lookout for great products which really work. When I am not writing about all things beauty, I like to do Yoga and I make an amazing brownie. It is all about balance!
