How to Maintain Your Tan

How to Maintain Your Tan

When the seasons change and the weather becomes colder and more autumnal, your summer tan can begin to fade. In order to maintain your tan and keep your skin looking golden and luminous, you need to adjust your bodycare routine.

3 Ways to Maintain Your Tan

Keeping your skin beautifully bronzed and soft is a hard enough task in the summer months. Yet coming into Autumn, it can be an even bigger challenge as we battle the changing weather.

  1. Moisturise
  2. Use Self Tan
  3. Exfoliate

Moisturise

Moisturising your skin is absolutely key to help maintain your tan. Without hydration, your skin becomes dry and cracks; leaving behind scaly areas that make the tan look patchy and cause accelerated fading.

Choose a lightweight dry oil in the morning that can sink in straightaway. This will encourage you to moisturise every morning as it won’t take long to do, or cause you to wait around, as a dry oil sinks in straightaway. We love the This Works Skin Deep Dry Leg Oil, as it not only helps to prolong your tan, but also contains a blend of Pressed Plant Oils to nourish and soothe dehydrated areas, and prevent peeling after tanning.

You don’t only have to use a moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated, face masks are also great at boosting your skin’s moisture levels. Try Bobbi Brown’s Radiance Boost Mask, which helps to slough away dead skin cells, all while improving the clarity and hydration of your complexion.

Use Self Tan

This might seem counter-intuitive, but using a self-tan on top of your natural one can actually enhance your own golden glow. As your tan fades, a fake one will keep your skin looking golden and gorgeous.

Choose an easy, buildable formula that melts into the skin and doesn’t look like fake tan. James Read’s newest Fool Proof Bronzing Mousse is a fake tanner’s dream. Made with 72 Hour Hydration Technology, the tan melts into your skin and locks moisture in with it, leaving your skin super smooth for days after. In addition, the tan lasts up to 7 days and doesn’t have any fake tan smell whatsoever (trust us, we tested it to make sure), and instead is beautifully scented with Mandarin and Neroli.

If you like to use a tanning product that specific for the skin on your face, try the ELEMIS Total Glow Bronzing Moisturiser. It creates a lovely golden glow that is perfect as your makeup base.

Exfoliate

Again, this might seem counter productive to keeping your tan, but the longer dead skin cells sit on your skin, the quicker your tan will start to become patchy.

Choose a gentle scrub that will gently buff away dead cells, dirt and impurities without taking off all your tan. Plus, a delicate scrub will also help prep your skin for a perfect self tan application.

We love the ELEMIS Frangipani Monoi Salt Glow Scrub, which feels super nourishing on the skin thanks to its blend of exotic oils, which also leaves behind a delicately floral and vanilla scent.

It’s best used in the bath when you can scrub your whole body, and really work into areas where your tan looks patchy.

For your face, try Pixi’s Overnight Glow Serum, which contains a blend of Glycolic Acid to gently exfoliate as you sleep, so you awaken with a renewed complexion.
