Beauty Myths Debunked

To coincide with April Fool’s Day, we have decided to debunk those beauty myths which just aren’t true, and help you separate the fact from the fiction. Over the years, plenty of beauty rumours have emerged, and while some of them ring true, there are others which are just plain false. Some of these myths can be dangerous for you, such as the crazy one that tanning beds are better for your skin than sitting in the sunshine (this is the one we think is the most ridiculous!). As a result, we thought it was time to put the lies to bed and give you the best beauty truths so you can look and feel your best.

Beauty Myths Debunked

Tanning Beds are better for you than Natural Sunshine

FALSE

This is by far one of the most false and dangerous beauty myths we have heard of! While you may think that a 10-minute stint on a tanning bed is better for you than sitting in sunshine, think again! Just one session on a tanning bed can actually increase your risk of melanoma (one of the most deadly forms of skin cancer.) Going in the sunshine with a high SPF in the early morning and late afternoon will keep you out of the sun’s strongest rays, while still giving you that much needed Vitamin D.

Swap the tanning bed for some SPF such as such as the Vichy Ideal Soleil SPF 50 Face and Body Milk. If you want to get a glow for a night out, then use a tanning agent such as Vita Liberata’s Fabulous Self Tanning Gradual Lotion.

Chocolate is Bad for Your Skin

TRUE (ish!)

This is one of the most sad myths that actually rings some truth. Chocolate can contain high amounts of artificial sugar, which is not great for our skin. This artificial sugar can lead to raised insulin levels which can cause inflammation. This inflammation can result in dulling skin, wrinkles and breakouts. Eating chocolate as a treat and in moderation won’t change your skin that much, so make sure to keep it as an occasional treat.

If you are craving something sweet, then opt for something that contains natural sugars such as a smoothie. We have some great recipes that help to give you glowing skin!

Scrub Your Skin Squeaky Clean

FALSE

If your skin feels squeaky clean, chances are that your cleanser is too harsh for your skin type and is actually drying it out. Your skin should never feel uncomfortable or tight at any point, so if it does, it might be suffering from dehydration and damage. Opt for delicate and gentle cleansers such as the Caudalie Gentle Cleansing Milk which will remove makeup, oil and dirt without causing irritation or redness.

If you aren’t sure what your skin type is and are in need of a little inspiration, then make sure to read our blogs on how you can find out. We have a guide to normal skin, dry skin and oily skin.

Use Hydrating Ingredients on Oily Skin Types

TRUE

Oily skin can actually need hydration! When the sebaceous glands produce excess oil, it can be a result of the skin suffering from dehydration. Cleansers with astringent-containing ingredients such as Witch Hazel, can remove the natural oils from the skin, and as a result, the skin will retaliate by producing more oil to compensate for this loss.

Our Healthy Skin Box for Oily/Blemish prone skin contains everything you need to start your skincare journey to radiant skin.
