British women 'willing to spend last £10 on lipstick'

More than half of British women would blow their last tenner on a lipstick rather than a mascara, new research shows.

A study conducted by the Clothes Show Live finds women are more likely to invest in a confidence-boosting lippy than new mascara when they are looking for a cosmetic treat during the downturn.

The event's organisers state: "This kind of purchase offers a confidence and self esteem boost for relatively little expense; a cheap shopping fix and providing a much needed perk particularly in the midst of hard economic times."

Lipstick may be a small part of getting glammed up but it can make a big difference to an outfit.

Scarlett Johansson attended the premiere of her new film The Spirit last night, wearing a dazzling black and white dress but both Marie Claire and the Daily Mail praised her ruby red lipstick.

The newspaper said "lashings" of bright lipstick really "vamped up" her outfit.
