How to Contour | Three Easy Steps

Although strobing has taken over the fashion world, a little bit of contour will never go out of fashion.  Contouring not only allows you to perfect your symmetry but also helps you define your face (which can never be a bad thing).  I know a lot of people are scared to apply much darker shades onto their face but with my 3 easy steps, you will have a perfectly contoured face in no time.

What is contouring?

Contouring is simply a play of shading areas of your face to give you more defined features.  It is all about accentuating your natural features by enhancing and sculpting.

Vichy Dermablend Setting Powder

Real Techniques Foundation Brush

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge

The Technique

Prepare Your Skin

Exfoliate, Moisturise and apply your base (Primer / Foundation) depending on what you prefer.

Try not to miss out on these as they give you a better finish.  Exfoliation will get rid of any dead skin cells while moisturisers prevent cakey patchy look.

The Contour

1. Select a shade which is about 2 shades deeper compared to your skin tone and using a brush dab / stroke the product along the border of your hair line, the sides of your nose, directly under your cheekbones and the centre of your chin and along your jawline.

2. Now select a shade which is lighter than your skin tone and apply it along your t-zone, under your eyes in an upside down triangle and a little bit above your cupids bow.

3. The last step is to blend!  This I like doing with a foundation brush and a beauty blender but you can also use your fingers.  Use small strokes to blend the two shades together along the darker the lines.  Avoid circular motions when blending as this is muddle the lines.

P.S Contouring technique is slightly different for face shapes so keep practising and work out the best way which suits your face.

Setting It All

Use a translucent powder to seal all on your skin.  This also helps to make the makeup last much longer. Simply pat the powder on, leave it on for 5 mins and then brush the rest off.
