Whilst the rules on what you can and can't do during pregnancy can dramatically differ from country to country, there is one thing we are all in a agreement of; taking extra care in the sun. Though not many things would usually get in the way of topping up your tan at every chance, yours and your baby's health definitely does! However, your summer tan doesn't have to be your first sacrifice as a new Mum. We have put together a guide on how to stay safe in the sun during pregnancy and our top self-tanners so that you can get more than just a pregnancy glow and enjoy the warm weather this season.

SPF, SPF, SPF!

Pregnant or not, SPF should be a part of your daily skincare routine every day of your life! However, when you are pregnant, it's more important than ever as changes in hormones create an increased risk of sun damage. These changes can also result in increased pigmentation in the skin, meaning that you are more likely to develop dark spots. To avoid damage, use a high factor SPF of 30 or above on both your face and body, opting for a broad spectrum SPF that will block both UVA and UVB rays. Look out for 'physical sun creams that contain active ingredients such as Zinc Oxide that block the rays and tend to be more hypoallergenic and stay clear of Oxybenzone which may cause problems.

If pregnancy hormones have caused sensitivity or breakouts, opt for an oil-free sun cream that won't aggravate spots or add to any excess oil production.

Shade is your friend

Though it might have been the sworn enemy of tanning in previous years, on a hot day, shade is a much better option when sitting out. Whilst you're carrying your soon to be bundle of joy, especially in the early months, it is important to prevent overheating. A raised body temperature can be both dangerous for the baby and can cause dehydration more easily therefore it's advised that you don't spend longer than around ten minutes in the direct sunlight and instead switch it up for a shaded, cooler area to keep your temperature stable.

Spritz

Unfortunately, the Aperol kind is off the table for the next 9 months, but this cocktail of nourishing and pregnancy-safe ingredients will keep you cool this summer. The Mama Mio Lucky Legs Refreshing Spritz is perfect for mamas-to-be that are prone to swollen legs and ankles as the soothing spray helps to moisturise and calm the skin to make it more comfortable. Blended with Vitamin E, the Spritz offers protection against damaging external aggressors (always wear SPF as well as using the Spritz) and is infused with Essential Oils such as Peppermint and Menthol for a fresh and uplifting scent. The 360 nozzle offers a huge amount of range and versatility, even working while upside down, making it perfect for when your bump prevents you from reaching your toes!

Fake tan

Though spray tans and sunbeds are a definite no go for pregnant women, most self-tanning products are safe as they tend to sit on the surface levels of the skin and don't contain the same harsh chemicals. Instead of spending time in the direct sunlight to get your glow, opt for a fake tan to get the same bronzed look without putting the two of you at risk. Though most tanning products are pregnancy-safe, always check the ingredients and consult your doctor or midwife if you are unsure. As the skin is often more sensitive during pregnancy, always do a patch test before trying a new skincare product 24 hours before you apply it.

Other steps for staying safe in the sun whilst pregnant

  • Avoid going out during the middle of the day when the rays are at their strongest.
  • Wear a hat that shields your face, ears and eyes from the sunlight.
  • Wear a light, loose cover up to protect your skin as well as SPF.
  • Ask your doctor about suitable vitamin D supplements to make sure you are getting the necessary amount whilst keeping out of the sun.

Always consult your doctor or midwife before trying a new skincare product. Shop all tanning and sun care on LOOKFANTASTIC here.
