With scalp care searches increasing by over 200% on LOOKFANTASTIC from 2022 to 2023, we invited our beauty writer, Ella Bowers, to sit under the microscope with the Philip Kingsley sales and education manager, Laura Wells.
Looking to delve into a scalp-first haircare routine? You can nourish your scalp and locks with with our 6-piece LOOKFANTASTIC x Philip Kingsley Edit, featuring ultimate haircare heroes (4 full-size) to help restore your mane.
“I’ve always been curious about what lies at the root of my long locks and which products I can introduce to my routine to make my mane healthier, so I jumped at the chance to find out more," Ella says.
The scalp consultation started with Ella sharing what products she uses, and any haircare concerns she had, which included greasy roots and breakage from balayage.
“With a very fine hair type, you’ll need to wash it a little more frequently than once a week. Ideally, it should be every other day if you can,” Laura says.
Laura then used the microscopic camera (which has a magnification of x200!) across Ella’s scalp to show her exactly what lies at the root of her concerns...literally!
“You can see you have a little bit of congestion at your root here and flaking on the scalp in areas. By washing your hair more often you’re going to clear that up. Other than that, your scalp is generally in good condition,” Laura says.
Laura explains that your scalp isn’t self-cleaning, so by cleansing it regularly, you’ll have a much healthier scalp base to encourage healthy hair growth.
The At-Home Plan
As Anabel claims, Elasticizer is always the jewel to the crown! After all, your hair is your pride and glory, so you need to treat it like royalty. “Elasticizer is a pre-shampoo, deep conditioning treatment that floods the hair with moisture!
It contains nourishing oils such as olive and castor oil to add in more elasticity and give your strands more resilience and strength,” Laura says.
If you have a congested scalp like Ella, Laura recommends using the best-selling Flaky/Itchy Scalp Anti-Dandruff Shampoo every wash to lift off any build-up and flaking.
“I also recommend using the Moisture Balancing Shampoo, as it will allow hydration to go in where it’s needed. With very fine hair and colour at the ends, it will allow more hydration to go down the strands,” she says.
If you’re looking for more from your locks, the brand offers more in-depth scalp consultations at its London Clinic, or you can book a virtual consultation.
