ALL ABOUT ACIDS

They’re some of the most effective ingredients in skincare, but do you know your AHAs from your BHAs? Daniel Isaacs, Director of Research at scientific skincare brand Medki8, is here to give us the inside scoop on acids.

Why are acids commonly used in salon treatments?

Exfoliating acids can be your skin’s superhero; they exfoliate, smooth and visibly brighten stubborn skin concerns. As some of the most well proven ingredients in skincare, they have the potential to transform skin texture in a matter of weeks.

What are the risks of using acids in skincare?

Overusing high strength AHA/BHAs everyday can leave the skin barrier impaired, leading to sensitive and dry skin. Instead, introduce a twice-a-day acid to your daily routine such as our acid toner Press & Glow. Its hydrating qualities mean you avoid the downsides of overusing acids.

What is the difference between AHAs and BHAs?

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are usually water soluble and work to exfoliate the upper layers of the skin. Beta hydroxy acid (BHAs) are usually oil soluble and can therefore penetrate deep into pores, unclogging blockages to prevent blemishes.

How can you replicate salon treatments at home using your products containing acids?

Step One: Start by using your cleanser of choice- we recommend the Medik8 Gentle Cleanser.

Step Two: Then apply a direct acid such as our Sleep Glycolic-our bi-weekly exfoliating acid at-home peel.

Step Three: Next, use a targeting serum – we think Liquid Peptides are amazing.

Step Four: Follow with a dose of Vitamin A – this can be found in our Crystal Retinal.

Step Five: Finish off with a moisturiser – we recommend our Advanced Night Restore.
