About My Hair

Before we start our review, allow me to provide some context about my hair.

I have type 1A hair: it is pin-straight, with very little texture. Because of this, any kinks or frizz are very visible – especially after having my hair tied up - so a high-quality straightener is a necessity.

I get my hair lightened, so it can get very dry at the ends.

In terms of daily styling, I do as little as possible. I let my hair air-dry after an evening shower, and run a straightener through the next morning if needed. I treat my hair with bond builders and masks to reduce the appearance of damage, and always use a heat protector when styling.

What’s in the Set?

In the set you will find:

  • The straighteners with an attached guard
  • A heat mat
  • The Wet HairBrush
  • A wide tooth comb
  • A sleek box

Everything you need to style your hair with straighteners is included in the set, and all the pieces are incredibly high in quality. The wet brush is large and did not snag on my hair, and the wide tooth comb is great for separating curls or waves. Of course, the heat mat is a necessity for safe straightening, and it protected my surfaces from the hot straightener perfectly.

Product Features

Wide, Curved Plates

The plates that do all the work have a distinctive curved shape. This allows them to interlock together which makes flicking, waving, and curling even easier and more seamless.

I tried a curl on a section of my hair and I can confirm, creating a curl was very easy. Without the flat surface of a traditional straightener, getting a smooth flick was simple and seamless.

Revive Mode®

Perhaps the most unique feature of these straighteners is the vibrations.

Yes, you read that right. The Contouring Wide Iron has a vibrating function, or pressure-reducing Revive Mode®. They move at a high frequency, which allows the hair to pass through the plates with the least possible amount of friction. The vibrations reduce direct heat on individual hair strands, protecting them from unnecessary heat damage and keeping hair shiny for longer.

Truthfully, I wasn’t sure about this feature. Would a vibrating straightener truly make for a better user experience? My answer is yes!

When Revive Mode® is switched on, as you close the straighteners they begin to vibrate - but not in a way that is distracting or difficult to control. Hair truly does glide through very easily. The easier it glides through, the less contact with individual hairs, the less chance of heat damage! My partner, who has never used a straightener, also tried it out on my hair and he agreed that it felt very smooth with no snags.

If you are concerned about heat damage when straightening, this mode is perfect for you.

Mineral Infused Plates

The mineral sericite is used in the plates for its heat resistance and smooth surface. This is a common mineral with so many uses in cosmetics. It can often be found in foundations for its mattifying effect, or in paints for its metallic properties. In the straighteners, it helps to evenly distribute heat and is hard-wearing even when used in the hottest temperatures. Sericite is used for fire-proof coatings, so it will work for your hair!

The use of mineral coating promises to help lock in moisture and keep hair shiny, strong, and sleek.

Individualised Temperature Control

The Contouring Wide Iron has a huge range of 11 heat settings. They are super easy to switch between by using the sleek LED control panel, with temperatures ranging from 100-200°C. This allows you to choose the best temperature for your hair type and preferred style.

Which Heat Setting Should I Use?

As a general rule of thumb, dry or damaged hair should be treated with the lowest heats, anywhere from 100-150°C.

Thick, coarse, or curly hair will need a higher temperature to effectively straighten, but you should aim to keep this below 200°C. Luckily for you, this straightener will not exceed this temperature!

Chemically treated or coloured hair should have a straightener temperature of around 130-150°C in order to keep damage at a minimum and keep colour bright.

You should always use a heat protector or serum before straightening, and feel free to experiment with heat settings to see which works best for you.

My Thoughts

These straighteners are a delight to use. From unboxing them in their sleek packaging, to how quickly they heat up, to the LED screen, to the long cable, they are definitely going to replace my old pair.

The plates are wide, making styling so much easier as you can cover such a wide area in one swipe. My hair is fairly thick, and I was able to straighten my whole head in just a few minutes. Curling is also made easier with wide plates, as not only are you able to achieve bouncy, Old Hollywood curls, you can cover more hair per pass.

The deep blue colour is understated and polished, and the accessories like the brushes are very useful in achieving the perfect look. Truly a one-stop-shop for all your hair styling needs.

Well done, Cloud Nine. The Contouring Wide Iron is beautiful to use, and I will be reaching for it time and time again.
