Spring has finally sprung, and we’re welcoming the new season with open arms. Spring tends to arrive with an air of rejuvenation – a chance to refresh your habits, surroundings, and self. And what better way to say hello to the fresh season than switching up your skincare routine?

If you’re wondering why you should zhush your regime in time for spring, stay tuned! We caught up with Victoria Evans, education manager at Dermalogica, to discuss why it’s important to change your skincare in line with the warmer weather, PLUS the perfect products to fit the job.

“Your skin responds to seasonal and environmental changes such as climate and humidity levels,” explains Victoria. That means, as it finally begins to warm up here in Britain, your skin will benefit from a regime refresh.

So, to aid your skincare switch-up, here are our expert tips for revitalising your spring routine…

Lighten Up

Lighter textures should be your go-to as the months take a warmer turn this year. “As we transition into spring, lighter layers of hydration may feel more comfortable on the skin compared to the lipid-rich formulas needed during the winter.”

It’s important to layer-up on hydration in a way that doesn’t feel heavy or detectable. Swap out your thicker creams for refreshing, feather-light formulas. Dermalogica’s UltraCalming Calm Water Gel offers weightless hydration to dry or sensitive skin types, fortified with dual hyaluronic acid technology and apple fruit extract to soothe and replenish your complexion.

For oily skin types, the La Roche-Posay Effaclar MAT+ is designed to minimise the look of shine and sebum while providing lightweight hydration for up to 8-hours. The oil-free moisturiser features absorbent micro-powders and a sebo-control active to help create a mattified, comfortable canvas, ready for makeup wear.

Hardworking Cleansers

As we bask in the glorious sunshine, it’s easy to forget how sweat can build-up throughout the day. Make sure to use a gentle, hardworking cleanser to remove excess oils from your skin before you go to sleep.

“Balance combination skin with a gentle face wash to remove excess oil and restore moisture levels,” Victoria advises. She recommends Dermalogica’s bestselling Special Cleansing Gel for combination skin types, a soap-free foaming cleanser packed with balm mint and lavender to gently remove toxins while soothing the skin.

The CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser is another great formula for removing excess oil and impurities. The lightweight, fragrance-free cleanser hydrates the skin while supporting its natural barrier thanks to hyaluronic acid and three essential ceramides.

Lightweight Exfoliation + Water-Rich Hydration

Get your routine ready for spring with mild exfoliators and quenching serums. “Gentle acids and hydrating serums are easy to slot into your regimen and benefit all skin conditions,” Victoria shares. Acid exfoliators are known to nibble away at dead skin cells while refining uneven tone and texture, leaving skin with a radiant glow.

Discover the perfect spring formula with REN Clean Skincare’s Limited Edition Daily AHA Tonic. The glow-boosting toner is infused with organic cucumber for an instant freshness kick. Lactic acid and salicin work to dissolve dead cells and surface impurities, revealing a soft, luminous complexion.

For a generous surge of hydration, the Dermalogica Circular Serum could be the one for you. Powered by multi-molecular weight polyglutamic acid, hyaluronic acid, organic silicium and lactobacillus ferment, the serum gifts the skin a film of hydration while helping to support its natural barrier. Victoria adds, “We use ingredients to help stimulate skin to produce its own hydrating molecules or natural moisturising factors. This creates a circular cycle of hydration to sustain hydration levels in the skin for 10+ hours.”

Plus, the Circular Hydration Serum is suitable for all skin types!

Always Wear SPF

Sun cream should be worn all year round, not only when it gets warm. That said, as the sun starts to shine and its rays intensify, it’s more important than ever to slather your skin in an efficient SPF. All skin types can benefit from Dermalogica’s Prisma Protect SPF30, a light-activated, multi-tasking moisturiser that shields the skin from harmful sunrays while boosting your natural luminosity.

For pigmented skin types, Victoria recommends a balancing formula – like the PowerBright Moisturiser SPF50. This clever moisturiser helps to minimise the appearance of dark spots and uneven tone, fortifying the skin with broad-spectrum sun protection and cross-linked hyaluronic acid for a helpful dose of hydration.

Protect sensitive skin with La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+. This fan-favourite SPF is water, sweat and sand-resistant, offering high protection against harmful UVA, UVB and ultra-long UVA rays, thanks to the brand’s exclusive MEXORYL400 filter. It’s also super lightweight – that means perfect for spring!

“Remember to reapply sun cream every 90-120 minutes to stay protected,” Victoria reminds us.

Keep it Fresh

Add a refreshing face mist to your collection to help keep hydration levels topped up throughout the day. Coola’s Water Mist delivers a quenching burst of hydration, perfect for warm spring afternoons. Infused with certified organic coconut and aloe water, the moisturising face mist has a weightless texture that sits invisibly on the skin. Plus, it’s even equipped with SPF15 for added protection.

Avène’s Thermal Spring Water Spray is perfect for sensitive skin types. The soothing face mist spritzes the skin with long-lasting hydration, thanks to the brand’s innovative thermal spring water. Great for calming the feel of sunburn and dryness, this facial spray makes a fantastic springtime companion.

Victoria's Spring Skincare Dos and Don'ts:

  1. DON’T scrimp on your SPF and if you’re spending more than a couple of hours outside, take it with you to reapply. Protection 50 Sport SPF50 is great for face and body and is light and hydrating.”
  2. DO include regular exfoliation with a gentle acid to keep skin soft and smooth. Daily Microfoliant is great for all skins and instantly brightens and smooths.”
  3. DO keep hydration levels topped up by spritzing skin with a hydrating mist a few times during the day to prevent flakiness and dehydration. Antioxidant Hydra Mist adds pollution defence to hydration - perfect for spring days outside.”
