As happy as we all are to see the temperature rising, our skin isn't feeling quite as sunny about the warmer weather. During the summer season, your skin is more susceptible to dehydration as well as sun damage. You may have noticed that your skin is feeling a little bit drier, or that it needs just a touch more moisturiser in the morning. Although there's a lot of contributing factors, rising temperatures probably had something to do with it. We caught up with a couple of skin experts to discover how to tackle dry skin in summer and the best ways to keep your skin firmly situated in hydration station.

Why does skin become drier in Summer?

The first educator we sat down with was Charlotte Pitts, the Education Manager at SkinCeuticals. As a skincare specialist with over 10 years of experience in the industry, Charlotte definitely knows a thing or two about the subject.

"As the temperature rises, our skin struggles to hold onto water resulting in dehydrated skin that can become dry and flaky. To combat this, we recommend serum enriched with hyaluronic acid, a natural hydrating ingredient capable of absorbing 1,000 times its weight in water", Charlotte says.

Holding a comfortable seat in the top ten beauty ingredients list for at least the last five years, Hyaluronic Acid can be found in a whole bunch of products. If you're looking to include this holy grail acid in your skincare routine, it's best to seek it in serums rather than cleansers. Whereas face wash is washed off within minutes, serums stay on your face all day, giving your skin longer to absorb the hydrating powers of Hyaluronic Acid.

Charlotte's favourite Hyaluronic Acid infused beauty products:

"The SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Moisturiser is a lightweight, oil-free serum enriched with vitamin B5 and hyaluronic acid. It replenishes essential nutrients and helps bind moisture to the skin. It can be used on its own or in conjunction with other moisturisers for extra hydration. We also have a Masque version to use 1-2 x weekly for extra thirsty skin!"

"Next up, the Retexturing Activator Hyaluronic Acid Serum is an oil-free, dual-action hydrating and exfoliating serum, formulated to resurface and replenish skin. This daily treatment helps promote the skin’s natural exfoliation process, visibly improving the appearance of surface lines and wrinkles. It also dramatically smooths and softens the surface texture, making it ideal for dull and rough skins."

"Finally, the H.A. Intensifier is a multifunctional serum proven to amplify and maintain the skin’s natural hyaluronic acid levels. This helps to restore hydration deep in the dermis, improving the natural appearance of plumpness, smoothness, and firmness. Ideal for hydrating ageing skins."

We also spoke to Laura Miles, the Education Consultant at Decléor to find out the best way to keep your skin happy in the heat:

"If you find your skin becomes drier in the summer months this can be due to the weather warming up and the skin perspiring more, which increases water evaporation. More exposure to the sun can also damage the skin's barrier protection from environmental aggressors, which causes the skin to feel drier and more dehydrated. The drier the skin becomes, the more it can feel sensitised and fragile."

Laura's favourite Hyaluronic Acid infused beauty products:

"The DECLÉOR Cica-Botanic Mask is a new 99% natural formula to treat dryness and dehydration. Working to repair and protect, this mask has a corrective action to restore the skin's barrier. At the same time, restoring the external layer of skin helps to reduce further dryness and irritation, keeping the complexion hydrated for longer. Enriched with Eucalyptus essential oil and Centella Asiatica, the formula also helps to revitalise skin, promoting smoothness, radiance and plumpness."

"If you're looking for your next serum, the DECLÉOR Antidote Serum is a universal water-based formula that is ideal for all skin types. Rich in a high weight Hyaluronic Acid, the ingredient deeply penetrates the skin, repairing the barrier to strengthen the skin and reduce dehydration. It also has a smoothing action to really plump out dehydration lines and smooth the skin's surface."

"Finally, the Neroli Bigarade Comforting Body Milk is a day cream that's perfect for any person suffering from dry skin. It is designed to boost hydration levels with Neroli essential oil while Shea Butter and Jojoba Oil nourish dryness. Use alongside the Neroli Bigarade Aromessence Hydrating Serum for magnified results."
