It is 64 years today since Elizabeth was crowned Queen of England. To celebrate her Coronation Day, we're throwing it back to when it all began and feeling inspired by the incredible vintage makeup looks from the young Elizabeth on the day she took the throne.
On her Coronation Day, the Queen looked the picture of elegance. We adore the classic 1950s makeup of a red lip and defined brows. Replicate the look with our favourite products.
1950's foundations were thick, heavy creams, so many women simply used powders. On her Coronation Day, Queen Elizabeth was just 18 and she stuck to a lightweight, natural finish on her skin. Nowadays, we like to get the look with a colour correcting CC cream, like the L'Oréal Paris Nude Magique CC Cream. It helps to even out the skintone without adding too much coverage. For the soft, powdered finish that is so 1950's, set everything with a loose powder. We love the Aveda Inner Light Loose Powder as it still keeps a little radiance to the skin tone.
2.A Statement LipLipstick was a staple for the 1950s and it was a trend Elizabeth was clearly a part of; wearing a rich, coral lip on her Coronation Day. The lipstick was definitely the most statement part of the whole look, so try and find creamy, richly pigmented shades. We love the Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip Plumper in Tokyo for the perfect vintage colour and the bareMinerals Lovescape Marvelous Moxie Lipstick has us swooning with its retro gold packaging too.
3.Groomed BrowsFairly thick, well groomed brows were definitely the signature of the era. Whilst shapes were less sharp than a lot of modern tastes, a brush through with little bit of powder to fill in any sparse areas was a must. We love keeping our brows in shape with the L'Oréal Paris Brow Artist Genius Kit but if you still prefer a cream finish, try out the Ardell Pro Brow Sculpting Pomade for a touch of vintage Hollywood glamour.
4.Subtle Eye MakeupThe pared back, classic look doesn't need strong eye makeup. Let your flawless skin and beautiful lips do the talking instead and stick to fluttery, full lashes. For a vintage look, try out the Clinique Lash Power Feathering Mascara. It gives a beautifully feathery, fluttery finish without overloading the lashes. For a longterm boost to your lashes, go for Illamasqua's Masquara Gain; with walnut extract it gently dyes your lashes so that you can bat your lashes makeup free after a few weeks!
