Skincare 101 : Acne AND Dry Patches…

So June was Acne Awareness month and we wanted to share one last tip with you as the month of June comes to a close!  If you suffer from acne or dry skin, we have a question for you! Does your skin feel dry and still manage to break out?  It is very likely that you are not managing your dryness very well.  Dry skin means that our skin is renewing itself more often than usual and due to this, sometimes the newer cells are not formed very well.  As the new cells are migrating up to the surface of our skin, the old dead cells are also accumulating there at the same time.  This is the main reason behind your breakouts.

As I have mentioned before, our skin detoxifies itself every night and when it is unable to do so properly, the pore which is clogged will become a “spot”.  When you have normal skin, you can almost get away with cleansing alone but if your skin is dry, you also need to exfoliate.  Dead skin cells can add to clogging of pores and this is why we need to make sure we are getting rid of them.

Start exfoliating up to 3 times a week with a salicylic acid containing exfoliator such as Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermafoliant which breaks up any build-up from the core of the pore resulting in reduced congestion.  Once your skin starts showing improvement, you can reduce exfoliating to once or twice a week.

Another alternative is using a renewing moisturiser such as Effaclar H Moisturiser by La Roche-Posay.  This can be used twice a day and it also contains salicylic acid.  It not only tightens and cleans up your pores but you will also notice a significant change in skin texture and unevenness.

Other Advice to Consider

  1. Ensure you use products with at 30 SPF which also give you protection against UVA damage.
  2. As well as treating skin from outside, increase your water intake by not just drinking but eating water rich fruits and vegetable.
  3. Be selective with your makeup.  Don’t use products which have a lot of artificial pigments and large amounts of mineral oils as this can block your pores as well.

Make these little changes and trust me you will transform your skin in no time.  If you have any questions regarding your skin or would like more information about any products then email me at or tweet me @LFparmacist.
