Although it may seem like the sunshine has yet again gone away until next summer, this doesn't mean your spf should too. Misleadingly pushed as a 'summer staple', spf isn't just for warmer weather. Don't believe us? Lauren Faulkes, senior brand manager at La Roche-Posay, shares her top 5 reasons why spf should be pride of place in your skincare cabinet all year round.

1. UV rays are present all year long

"95% of UV rays are present all year long" reports Lauren. With the ability to penetrate through clouds and even windows, this means they still pose a threat to the skin no matter what the weather or time of year. “I recommend my patients wear Anthelios daily, rain or shine" says consultant dermatologist Hiva Fassihi. The daily sun cream is suitable for even the most sensitive skin types and contains high-level factor 50 spf to guard against UVA and UVB rays.

2. It helps prevent skin ageing

"Sun protection is an essential step in reducing the visible signs of ageing" says Lauren. Exposure to UV rays can reduce the production of natural elastin and collagen in the skin, causing premature wrinkles and lack of bounce in the complexion. Applying an spf 30 or above daily can help to prevent against the visible signs of ageing.

3. It supports the skin

Now formulated with skin-nourishing ingredients that work to hydrate and shield the complexion, most spf formulas can be worn alone as your daily moisturiser, streamlining your skincare routine. "The Anthelios UVMune 400 is the perfect texture for daily use; the lightweight formula is invisible, non-greasy and won’t sting your eyes" says Lauren. The cream works to hydrate the skin and is water, sweat and sand resistant for long-lasting comfort.

4. It prevents skin discolouration

Commonly found on more mature skin, exposure to UV rays can cause discolouration on the skin, often referred to as 'sun spots'. Wearing an SPF every day on both the face and body can help prevent this discolouration, keeping the skin tone even and radiant.

5. It makes the perfect makeup base

"Anthelios UVMune 400 makes a good daily make-up base due to its lightweight, fast absorbing texture" explains Lauren. Applying an spf moisturiser or sun cream before makeup helps to keep the skin supported and protected and helps to ward off unwanted irritation, providing a steady and consistent base for foundation.
