Squalane is a commonly-used but under-the-radar skincare ingredient, yet it's a secret superstar. Alongside Vitamin C, activated charcoal and witch hazel, it's about to become one of this year's hottest skincare ingredients.
What is squalane?
The body naturally produces something called squalEne but over time as we age, production decreases, causing dehydration and damage to the skin's cells.
SqualAne on the other hand is a substance (derived mostly from olives and sustainable sugarcane), which is actually friendlier, safer and more beneficial for the skin.
Super moisturising and yet surprisingly lightweight, it's a great emollient ingredient for all skin types, but especially those with dehydrated or combination complexions. It intensely hydrates without causing breakouts or clogging pores, making it one of our favourite ingredients to use in the colder weather when we don't want to use rich creams to combat dryness.
The Ordinary Squalane
If you're looking for a skincare product that will pack a punch in the anti-ageing department, The Ordinary's Squalane Solution with Retinol is perfect.
Formulated with a blend of o.5% retinol in a squalane solution, the serum helps to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, reduce the appearance of blemishes and hydrate the skin for a gorgeously glowing complexion.
Peter Thomas Roth Oiless Oil Squalane
Love the thought of an oil but found that it doesn't sit well on your skin? Well you will love Peter Thomas Roth's Oiless Oil made with 100% purified squalane.
The star ingredient in the serum is derived from sustainable sugar cane, which penetrates deeply into the skin without blocking pores or causing excess oil production.
The multi-purpose formula can be used on the face, body and hair and will leave your skin smooth, soft and revitalised without feeling greasy.
Ameliorate Transforming Body Cream
This super luxurious yet surprisingly lightweight Body Cream from Ameliorate has been specially formulated with a unique blend of squalane, shea and cocoa butters to help alleviate dehydration and prevent future dryness and damage.
Although the range is designed for people with keratosis pilaris (otherwise known as chicken skin) as it helps to alleviate bumps, it can be used on all skin types, and is especially great for those with sensitive skin thanks to its dermatologist-approved formulation.
