We were lucky enough to catch up with Laura Barnes, Development and Artistry Specialist at Sigma to discuss all things makeup.

Here at Lookfantastic, we are constantly playing around with new makeup and tools, but we wanted to know if using a makeup brush really does make all the difference to the finish. Luckily, Laura was on hand to answer all our questions and more.

The Benefits Of Makeup Brushes With Laura Barnes

Q How did you begin your career in makeup?
A
I have always been obsessed with makeup, but it was not until I started working at a retail counter that I discovered it was truly a passion.
Q What has been the highlight of your career?
A
There have been a few, but my favourite was seeing my idea for the Baking and Strobing brushes come to life (coming soon to Lookfantastic!)
Q Why should you use makeup tools over your fingers?
A
The finish that you get with a brush is far more even and flawless than with your fingers.
Q What is the one makeup tool you can’t live without?
A
My Sigma Spa® 2X Brush Cleaning Glove, nothing cleans my brushes better
Q How important is it to use a brush to apply your lipstick?
A
A lip brush really helps you to get that precise application of product and allows you to control the intensity of the coverage.
Q Can you use a brush for multiple purposes?
A
Absolutely! We always highlight the primary functions of our brushes, but they can be used in any way that works for you.
Q What is your beauty secret?
A
Drink lots of water and use preventative skin care. If you don’t take care of your canvas, your makeup will not look like it’s supposed to.
Q Is there an emerging beauty trend that excites you?
A
Deep Berry lips are always a fall trend that I cannot wait for.
Q What’s your favourite makeup look?
A
I love a bronze smokey eye or a soft eye with a dark lip.
Q Can you tell us how to effectively contour?
A
Here are three things to remember when highlighting and contouring:
  • Pick a contour shade that has a cool undertone and is a shade or two deeper than your skin tone.
  • Place your contour shade on to your temples, the hollows of your cheek and below the jaw, like you are drawing a 3 on your face.
  • Highlight the high points of your face: cheekbones, forehead, bridge of the nose and cupids bow.
