The 5 Step Summer Lip Treatment

The 5 Step Summer Lip Treatment

The warm weather, UV rays and humidity can wreak havoc on your lips in the summer months. While many people give their lips the TLC they deserve in the winter, they can often be neglected when it gets warmer, and this can result in dry, damaged and chapped skin.

Your lips themselves don’t have the same glands as other areas of skin on your body. This means that they can’t produce what’s necessary to keep them naturally hydrated and moisturised, so balms and lip treatments become necessary to prevent them from being damaged. Coupled with the heat, UV light and indoor air conditioning; the summer can become a hotbed for dry lips.

Lookfantastic’s Lip Treatment Guide

Follow our easy guide to looking after your lips, so they stay supremely soft, hydrated and healthy throughout the summer months.

  1. Keep Your Lips Protected

Keeping your lips protected from the harmful UV rays of the sun will help them to stay healthier, softer and more plump. UV light can actually cause the Collagen and Elastin in the skin on your lips to break down; resulting in fine lines, dryness and damage. Make sure to use an SPF lip treatment, especially during the summer months to keep them protected.

We love the Ole Henriksen Fresh Lips, which has an SPF of 15. The unique balm contains a base of Cocoa Butter and Vitamin E to intensely condition and nourish the lips. The lip treatment also contains Salicylic Acid and Menthol to buff away dead skin cells and leave your lips feeling refreshed. The result is insanely soft and plumped up lips.

  2. Exfoliate Your Lips

You might not think that you have to exfoliate your lips the same way you do your skin, and although you need to use much gentler products, the technique is still the same. Your lips are made up of skin cells, and so just like the skin on your face, they need to be buffed away to reveal new and healthy cells underneath.

The Lancer Method Polish for Sensitive Skin is formulated with Pomegranate and Pumpkin Extracts, which exfoliate away dead skin cells, while Brown Sea Algae rehydrates the skin to leave you with kissably soft lips.

  3. Hydrate Your Lips

While you may not be able to imagine putting moisturiser on your lips, it is in fact an excellent way of rehydrating your skin overnight. It gives the cream a chance to soak in properly while you sleep and refortify the skin on your lips. If you are suffering with severe dryness and damage, then make sure you do this step every night to protect and condition your lips.

We love the Caudalie Anti-Wrinkle Eye and Lip Cream, which has been formulated with Fern, Horse Chestnut, Witch Hazel and Liquorice, alongside the brands exclusive Matrixyl 3000 Complex. These work together to smooth and moisturise the lip area, and decrease fine lines and wrinkles.

  4. Keep Your Body Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water will help to contribute to keeping your lips hydrated and healthy. If your body is dehydrated, it will start to take moisture from other parts of your body; including your lips. Make sure you drink at least 6 glasses of water daily to keep your cells well nourished. During the summer months, Coconut Water makes a lovely refreshing treat, and has amazing hydration benefits.

  5. Eat Lots Of Fresh Fruit And Vegetables

Eating a diet rich in vitamins and minerals gives you glowing and healthy skin, so it is little doubt that it also contributes to healthy lips too. During the summer months, reach for water-rich foods such as Watermelon, Cucumber, Strawberries, Apricots and Grapes, which contain many essential nutrients, but also have a high-water content; ensuring you stay both healthy and hydrated.
